A new study found AI data centers are warming the land around them by up to 16°F for miles in every direction

Researchers at Cambridge analyzed satellite temperature data from 6000+ data centers over the last 20 years focusing on locations far away from cities.

They did that so the heat couldn’t be blamed on traffic, factories, or population density. This isolates the effect of AI infrastructure itself.

They call this the “data heat island effect,” where cooling systems push massive amounts of heat into the surrounding air. It’s basically like standing behind an AC unit, except this one is the size of a warehouse and runs 24/7.

Here’s what they found; once a data center starts operating… the surrounding land gets 2.7°F to 4.3°F hotter on average. In some cases, temperatures increased by up to 16°F, and the heat spread as much as 6 miles in every direction.

In regions like Mexico and Spain, temperatures rose about 3.6°F over 20 years; even though nearby areas without data centers did not experience the same change.

And this is only accelerating. Data center electricity use is expected to more than double by 2030 as AI adoption keeps growing.

Here’s the part no one talks about: AI isn’t free, someone always pays. Right now the cost shows up in energy infrastructure; and even the temperature of the environments around us. And while all of this is happening, most people are still using AI for basic, low value tasks.
