Quercus Biosolutions closes $5m seed round to tackle resistant weeds with designer proteins

St. Louis–based agbiotech startup Quercus Biosolutions has raised an oversubscribed $5 million seed round to advance its AI-designed “mini‑protein” crop protection platform, with a first focus on herbicide‑resistant weeds. The round was led by Serra Ventures and included Starshot Capital, the Grantham Foundation, Flyover Capital, Rootstock Capital, and other investors, according to AgFunderNews.

What Quercus is building

Quercus is using generative AI to design a new class of crop protection actives based on small, engineered proteins—often called mini‑proteins—that can be tailored to disrupt specific biological targets in pests and weeds. The company’s thesis is that this approach can deliver the efficacy and speed of traditional chemistry while being more precise and adaptable, helping address the growing crisis of herbicide‑resistant weeds that has eroded the utility of legacy products like glyphosate.

The platform repurposes generative AI tools originally developed for human medicine and applies them to agriculture, aiming to compress discovery timelines from years to months. Quercus says it has already demonstrated that its mini‑proteins work in live plants and has built a fast development pipeline with partners to test, optimize, and validate product‑ready candidates.
